The Reef Discovery Center will open in two phases. Phase I features the community coral nursery program (CCNP), sponsored by the South Florida Association of Environmental Professionals (SFAEP). Phase II focuses on public education about Florida’s reefs.
The first phase opens on March 1. Through tours of the CCNP, RDC visitors will learn about threats to Florida’s coral reefs and about efforts to restore them. Visitors will be able to see coral restoration in practice and have the opportunity to engage as CCNP volunteers.
The second phase begins in June 2023, when interactive, immersive displays will be rolled out in the public education space. These cutting-edge exhibits include a virtual reality diving experience (visitors can experience SCUBA diving without even getting wet), an interactive learning table (visitors can impose threats to the reefs and watch their adverse effects happen), and an interactive living reef wall (visitors can induce corals to spawn and help baby corals grow and thrive).
